Keeping Cool Campaign

The Tasmanian Keeping Cool Alliance is running a campaign for a Tasmanian Medical Cooling Electricity concession. This campaign is modelled on other successful campaigns held in other Australian States.

Heat intolerance is a significant medical problem affecting people with Multiple Sclerosis and a range of other conditions such as, but not limited to - Parkinson’s disease, Motor Neurone Disease, Post Polio Syndrome and brain and spinal cord injury.

Tasmania, like other states, provides much valued financial assistance for electricity costs to pensioners and others on low incomes, and those who rely on life support equipment. This however does not address the medical need that some people on low incomes have to keep cool. People with MS and other heat intolerant conditions do not have a choice about turning on their air conditioners.

Using air conditioners on hot days and nights is a luxury for many people, but for people with MS and other heat intolerant conditions, it is a medical necessity.  To learn more of our campaign and how to actively participate, please contact our Keeping Cool Campaign Officer, Michael Bowman, at the MS Society of Tasmania on 6220 1111 or email michael.bowman@mstas.org.au.

The Keeping Cool Alliance has provided a submission to the 2012-2013 budget community consultation round. The submissions received are now to be considered by government.
